<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Our BW prints are using paper from Double A, made from trees grown in the unused patches of land between rice paddies in Thailand called Khana. The trees used are specially designed to be fast growing to become paper in 3-5 years.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Double A company pays the farmers to use the land, harvests the trees, treats the wastewater, and builds facilities to turn anything unused into energy for the villages.

While the trees grow, they remove carbon-dioxide from the atmosphere, and create oxygen, in addition to compensating the farmers.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is where the paper for our BW prints comes from. The paper for our prints is part of a sustainable process. (Our toner is unique & sustainable too- we'll talk about that in another conversation.)

Check out this cool video explaining Double A's holostic process:

<span style="font-family: "cambria"; white-space: pre-wrap;">For instructors using OER, or materials you have written yourself and hold the copyright on, or titles in the public domain, preview our new PDF Portal to host your PDF’s on our site to provide a simple way for your bookstore (or students) to obtain a print directly from us without needing to upload a pdf file.
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; white-space: pre-wrap;">

<span style="font-family: "cambria"; white-space: pre-wrap;">We want your feedback. Please post any comments on your experience below in this blog post. Or use our contact page.
<span style="font-family: "cambria";">
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: x-small; white-space: pre-wrap;">printMe1.com is a great way to get pdf's printed, bound, and shipped for as little as $11.99. <span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: small;">We created a simple way for instructors to store pdf's that are accessible by their students or campus bookstore from a "ready to checkout" link. Our PDF Portal is also usable for anyone who needs to distribute print materials to users in the US and at the end user's purchase option. There is no charge to use the PDF Portal.
<span style="font-family: "cambria";">
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: small;">By hosting your pdf's of OER instructional materials on our PDF Portal, your students are directed to our site to obtain a print for OER course materials <span style="font-family: "cambria"; white-space: pre-wrap;">and find the suggested format preselected in their cart<span style="font-family: "cambria"; white-space: pre-wrap;">, without requiring them to find our site and then upload. The same goes for campus bookstores.
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; white-space: pre-wrap;">

<span style="font-family: "cambria"; white-space: pre-wrap;">Before you upload, you can also use our Build feature to mash up OER titles and mix with your own works to make a custom open source teaching tool for your course.

Our BUILD feature allows you to:

•Combine PDF's into one single print file.

•Deselect any pages you don't want.

•Automatically add blanks to maintain chapterization, so each PDF file starts on the right like it should in a book when printed double-sided, like we do automatically at printMe1.com.

•Go to our checkout with your edited, combined PDF file to print at printMe1.com- or- choose download to proof, or save your new, combined & edited PDF file.

Here's how:

1.) Start by clicking the "BUILD" link at the top of the menu bar.

6.) At Set Preview, you can click to "Ensure each PDF starts on the right".

This special feature will add a blank at the end of any PDF with an odd page count to then allow the 1st page of the next PDF to begin on the right hand side of your print, like it should in a book.

In this example, we had two single page pdf files, and by clicking the box, the site added a blank at the end of each file.

Click "Build My PDF" to advance.

7.) After your PDF is built, you can choose to print or download. Clicking Print takes you to checkout at printMe1.com. If you click download, you can preview your edited pdf to proof or distribute.

Color printing involves heavier coverages and has fine details, so we need a smooth, bright paper, with some opaqueness.
We've chosen Hammermill Premium Laser print in 24# basis weight.

Hammermill Premium Laser Print 24# paper is has a 98 brightness, radiant white shade for excellent image contrast for color-intensive printing. It is very suitable for printing documents with color photographs and full-color presentations. The paper is also acid-free for added archival quality that extends the life of the document and is elemental chlorine free.

We analyze the suitability of our suppliers not only to make sure we are providing the best product to you, but also to make sure our products come from sustainable sources.

This paper is produced by International Paper and Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certified. This means it comes from a certified sustainable forestry source. This paper also contributes toward satisfying credit MR1 under LEED® according to the the manufacturer.

Meet our manufacturer, Hammermill by International Paper:

Using paper from sustainable sources means the trees used for the paper can be though of as a responsibly managed crop that provides a habitat for wildlife, while creating oxygen and removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere before harvested for uses in the paper and lumber industries.

The economic value created by using print means this sustainable cycle continues. Enjoy your printing!

We've all seen the little tag line some people put on their emails. "Think about the environment before you print this email." -Or- "Save a tree. Don't print this email."

There is a common misconception that printing is not good for the environment, but it's actually the opposite.

Users of print are in fact improving the environment, not harming it. Use print with confidence that is not only not harmful to the environment, but is actually beneficial to the environment.

When you support print, you are supporting sustainable forestry as well. From the forest to the mill for paper and packaging, to the printshop, and finally to your mailbox. This entire process is based on the foundation of growing trees and plants for a valuable use, then growing more, not just consuming them.

Geared to provide a simple PDF printing service for users of engineering formats of Arch C (18"x24"), Arch D (24"x36"), Arch E1 (30"x42"), & Arch E (36"x48"), printMyBlueprints.com makes it easy to get engineering PDF's printed & shipped to your US Mailbox just like printMe1.com, but with a few additional enhancements for the building & construction industries.

These users occasionally are receiving multi-page PDF's they need to get prints from, but sometimes don't want every page in the PDF. So for them, we took the printMe1.com platform, and added a "burst" feature, where every page appears as thumbnail, which can be clicked to deselect or reselect it in the print job. Mousing over a thumb will expand it to better help see which page it is.

Then the selected pages are send over to checkout. Users can also upload multiple PDF's at the same time & combine them in the same order as long as they are the same print size. Sets of the final selection can be ordered in any quantity, with stapling as a binding option.

Checkout is the same as printMe1.com via Paypal.

Printing is in two business days or less, and shipping is via USPS 2-3 Day Priority, so printMyBlueprints.com users can expect their order in a week or less anywhere in the USA.

The same distribution & fulfillment hack we posted about for printMe1.com also works for printMyBlueprints.com, so architects, engineers and other document creators can us it to conveniently distribute sets to any client in the US just by uploading to printMyBlueprints.com, and changing the name and address in their PayPal "Ship To". More info here.

The most common use of it applies to software. Linux, for example, is an open source product, as is Mozilla Firefox in browsers, Drupal and Joomla in content management systems, and even "non-tech" open source uses exist like open role playing game (RPG) systems, or "open gaming".

Open source is a free license for users to use a product, and also allows users to develop improvements to the product. The product improves and grows over time by the free contributions to the product from the users.

When you think about the open source development process, (develop, improve, use...repeat), what you see is something perfectly suited for textbook development. How many different ways can textbooks be written for introductory courses like calculus, physics, or chemistry? Does most content change much? The answer seems obvious that some collaborative effort from professors in their respective fields could yield highly useful open source products in most mass introductory courses that could be used, improved, and reused, for no cost, just like other open source products.

Textbook prices have risen 1000% in the last 40 years, and open source textbooks can solve this serious price problem. SPARC argues open textbooks are now providing competition to lower costs.

Open Source Textbooks (or "open textbooks"), and Open Educational Resource (OER) options from Rice University's OpenStax, Kansas State University's New Prarie Press, and Minnesota's Open Textbook Library are becoming increasingly popular as students pass on pricey textbooks. U Mass Amherst has created an "Open Education Initiative" that has cost just $60,000 to develop open source options that has saved their student's over $1M and posted this list of other open textbook libraries.

The great benefits of Open Textbooks is that they can be distributed digitally and then printed by the student using a method of their choice. Most use a Creative Commons 3.0/4.0 License. The instructor can post it in the course management system, and students can choose to print it themselves, or use a service like printMe1.com's, where we can print, bind, and ship to their mailbox probably for less than their own costs, and save the hassle.

Print is also proving to be better for learning, college students actually prefer printed textbooks, and printMe1.com is focused on providing affordable and simple print options perfectly suited for the classroom. (Like we say #printisgood.)

The only limitation for widespread open source textbook adoption is that there is little incentive by anyone to promote open source. There isn't a book rep out there getting a commission to sell an opentext, so it's up to the professor and the student to figure it out. The professor makes the textbook choice, but its important for the students to ask if open source options were considered. (OpenStax provides a PDF flyer as a toolkit to use to discuss with your professors. Use it!)

So students, ask your professors for open source textbooks, and professors, take a look at the options.

Open source and printMe1 is a win-win in the classroom!

The biggest story since the last time we compiled a list of articles is the Naomi Barron research that again confirms comprehension advantages of paper over screens. More discussion on comprehension benefits of focused reading, desirable difficulty of handwriting, and how it relates to print and paper. We posted these links on our social media (Twitter, Google+, Facebook) over the last year. This is a link compilation.

The biggest issue in academia from this research is the transition away from print for other reasons not related to the primary purpose of education: comprehension.
We've put together some tips to help make it easier for you and your students take advantage of our convenient options.

1.) Step 1. Understand that print is good. Millenials like to study from print and there are growing reasons for this. And paper is a renewal resource. These concepts run counter to conventional wisdom, and designing your teaching materials around an affordable print option is one that will be appreciated by your students at evaluation time for price, convenience, and effectiveness.

2.) Plan Ahead. Most of the things you can include are right in front of you. If you usually post notes & slides before each lecture, consider preparing the notes before the semester starts. If you routinely create handouts like study guides for tests or problems for review, consider if they can be reused and organized in one larger file for distribution.

3.) Creating your own materials already? Some more tips on what to include.
If you are creating a book, don't forget to check out open source,
creative commons, or public domain materials. There are some great resources
out there for rights-free materials to use in class, and the key word
there is "free". Examples: OpenStax, Community Texts, Project Gutenberg, Feedbooks.

4.) Starting from scratch? Here's why you should create your own materials if you can. The cost of educational materials has outpaced inflation by 1000% in the last 40 years, and 9% since last year (link). You can beat this trend by creating your own materials. Lecture notes and powerpoint slides combined with including areas to handwrite next to each slide or topic makes a great teaching tool. Handwriting notes has been found to improve memory compared to typing.

5.) Design for print. You can use a familiar page designer, powerpoint, or word processing application, and then print or save the final draft to PDF to distribute to your students. The end result of your collection should be something easy to print. For that, we recommend a standard 8.5"x11"page size. Our service automatically prints double-sided/back-to-back at this page size.

6.) Distribute the PDF to your students & tell them about printMe1.com. This step is using whatever type of course management system you use, but then tell them about our service. They will be glad you did!

The science behind this is fascinating. The few different studies coalesce around how the brain treats words read from print differently than words read from screens. Also, the print format has factors that tend to improve comprehension when reading from it. We are in the beginning stages of discovering the effects of electronic devices on learning, but these links below show the research to date.

As many of our users are in education, here's a summary of recent studies and articles.

Key Articles & Studies:

1.) The brain treats letters as 3D objects. Therefore, letters appearing on a sheet of paper improve the data mapping to memory. See Ferris Jabr's Article- "Reading on Paper vs Screens. Scientific American, April 2013."

2.) Along these lines, readers from a Kindle are missing the sense of visual progress as they read. In Anne Mangen's study, the Kindle readers scored significantly worse on reconstructing the timeline of events in the story given to both Kindle and paper readers. See the Guardian Article "Readers Absorb Less on Kindles than Paper, Study Finds" From August 19, 2014.

Other recent articles:

3.) Scrolling is very bad for comprehension, whereas writing is good. Compare the distraction of scrolling to a page online vs the "desirable difficulty" of taking handwritten notes. Check out this article about the Cleveland Browns going back to handwritten notetaking while the NFL is pushing the Windows Surface on all the teams. From WSJ August 11, 2014.

4.) "Read S l o w l y to Benefit Your Brain and Cut Stress." WSJ Sept 14, 2014

5.) "Why You Might Want To Ditch Your E-reader and Go Back to Printed Books." Washington Post Aug 21, 2014

6.) "Serious Reading is Taking a Hit From Online Sources, Researchers Say." Washington Post, April 6, 2014

As we all sort this out, big questions come up when applying these differences to education. For the last 10 years, print has been under siege at every educational institution from the Administration looking to cut costs, and the IT department looking to offer an online solution that makes them look good. But data is out there that these decisions are made without considering the impact on the number one reason why the students are there: Comprehension.

The class of 2015 will be the first class to have gone through college with a handheld electronic device and digital distribution at the forefront of of their reading options. The question is, are there they any better off with the electronic options?

Other than carrying a lighter backpack, probably not.

There is a superb piece by Ferris Jabr published in the Scientific American that has quantified the effectiveness on reading from paper vs screens.

The benefits of reading from paper were explained and had a measurable impact on students' information retention and learning. The article goes in depth on how the brain works, what we remember, and how we learn. It's lengthy and worth a look.

The gist of the article is that evidence is appearing that shows the benefits of paper over digital.

"In a study published in January 2013 Anne Mangen of the University of Stavanger in Norway and her colleagues asked 72 10th-grade students of similar reading ability to study one narrative and one expository text, each about 1,500 words in length. Half the students read the texts on paper and half read them in pdf files on computers with 15-inch liquid-crystal display (LCD) monitors. Afterward, students completed reading-comprehension tests consisting of multiple-choice and short-answer questions, during which they had access to the texts. Students who read the texts on computers performed a little worse than students who read on paper."

PrintMe1.com comes in to make it easy to distribute digitally, then gives students the option to print affordably.
(We love to print simple books, manuals, and other high page count documents, that is.) But, we also strive to be responsible stewards of our environment.

Frequently, paper use gets a bad reputation as something negative for the environment while computer use gets a positive review. A closer look shows that this is not at all true.

Here are some interesting facts provided by International Paper in their case study titled "Down to Earth- A practical look at environmental issues and Trends" comparing paper & printing to their usual substitute, pixels.

* The amount of energy needed to produce 110,000 sheets of office paper will only power a computer continuously for 5 months.

*Nearly 60% of all paper in the US is recycled. Only 18% of electronic devices are recycled and electronic device waste constitutes the single largest toxic waste export of the US.

*Paper is inherently renewable. The paper and forest products industry replenishes more than it takes, and ensures the sustainability by planting treees at a rate exceeding 3x what is harvested. There is no renewable equivalent for computers and gadgets, which consist of petroleum-based plastics and mined minerals.

There are different reasons to use each. The purpose of this post is to show that going with pixels over paper is not automatically a "green" result.

Just choose the best method for your situation.

Cheers!

A copy of the case study can be obtained for free from rit.edu here.
Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02708947742819161108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1700217137989603065.post-1605097141427776042009-04-23T14:49:00.007-04:002009-04-23T16:16:09.646-04:00The New New Print Model: Distribute, then Printme1A recent interview in the April 2009 issue of Printing Impressions with Susan Kelly, the CEO of printing industry powerhouse K/P Corp and formerly with RR Donnelley, Pitney Bowes, and Gannett mentioned two key trends in printing today:

First, the industry is fragmented and made up of small companies that tend to be cannibalistic.

Second, print-then-distribute used to be the best method to achieve printing efficiency. Not so today. Flip it and you have the new model: "distribute-then-print".

Susan didn't know it at the time, but she just described Printme1.com.

A PDF creator can easily distribute their file directly to their users by any number of electronic methods (FTP, email, direct downloading from a website, etc.), and then leave the print format completely up to the end user.

Want to read it online, there you are. Want to print it out a little at a time yourself, go right ahead. Want to use it on a bound book format, just say printme1.com.

Or just call the new, new model: Distribute-then-Printme1

Cheers!Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02708947742819161108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1700217137989603065.post-71096788285065868002009-03-29T10:51:00.008-04:002010-08-06T09:18:12.511-04:00High Page Count Printing DefinedHigh Page Count Printing Defined:

1.) Documents that kill your printer. Cause you to scream, grip, and stress-out while trying to print yourself. That sound your machine is making can't be good. Neither is the smell. And you get to jog together a pile of heat curled papers, too. How big is that stapler anyway?

2.) Documents that cost an arm and a leg to print at a Kinko's or office supply store. Drive there to pay $100. No thanks. I'll read it online.

3.) Documents that would catch the eye of someone at your office if you tried to print it there. Do you really want your coworkers to watch you turn the office machine into your own printshop?
"Umm, yea, who printed that family history book that broke the copier? I'm going to have to ask you to come in on Saturday and print those TPS reports..."

But seriously, we'd coin the phrase "High page count printing" to mean some document that is too big to print yourself for whatever reason. It's probably a little different for everyone.

As far as Printme1.com is concerned, the page count really doesn't matter. We can print any file regardless of page count, bind and mail it for 3.5¢ per page ($11.99 min).

Just remember, if the PDF is over 800 pages, we'll punch 3 holes in it to use in a binder (not included, sorry, had to mention that), instead of binding it.

So keep those big files coming!Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02708947742819161108noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1700217137989603065.post-65116524857403450522009-03-21T17:45:00.006-04:002010-08-06T09:18:59.691-04:00What are you printing at Printme1.com?When we created this site, we had in mind people who needed to print high page count documents like open source computer manuals.

These are pdf's with hundreds of pages, so they need to be printed double-sided and spiral bound. Usually, this meant a trip to Kinko's...until Printme1.com came along, that is.

Since we opened, we've seen more than a few pdf's from computer programmers like we thought. We've printed some legal documents for attorneys, government documents for politicians (really fat stuff llike the Stimulus bill, for example), and even some documents for RPG gamers.

What else do you think could Printme1.com be great for?Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02708947742819161108noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1700217137989603065.post-84516804543272220392009-03-21T14:18:00.011-04:002009-03-21T18:08:57.745-04:00Free PDF Conversion MethodsSo you have a document you want to print on Printme1.com, but it's not a PDF...What do you do? Well, there are many ways to turn that file into a PDF.

First, if you have a full version of Adobe Acrobat, then you are in luck. But I suppose that if you had that (or the $700 for the full version), you wouldn't be here right now.

Second, the same goes if you are using a mac. PDF conversion is built into the print function in OS X. Simply open the file in your app, click print, and instead of doing what you usually do, just click the button on the left and choose "Save as..PDF". You will have to note where you are saving it to, or rename & change the location yourself. That's it. Simple.

Now, what if you've got a PC and don't want to spend the money for Acrobat 9? You're in luck. There are many conversion programs that are free. Some you install on your PC (good if you plan to do this alot) Others are hosted online (better if need it fast and you don't want to install programs on your computer)

Here are a few of them:

Free Online Services:

1.) PrimoPDF (http://www.primopdf.com)

2.) PDF Converter (http://www.freepdfconvert.com)

3.) PDF Online (http://66.89.113.16/doc2pdf/)

Free Downloadable Programs:

1.) doPDF (http://www.dopdf.com)

2.) PrimoPDF (http://www.primopdf.com)

3.) CutePDF (http://www.cutepdf.com)

If you have already used any of these PDF conversion apps or services, let me know how they worked for you.Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02708947742819161108noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1700217137989603065.post-18144056224140767352009-02-27T14:15:00.018-05:002010-08-21T10:43:40.061-04:00Printme1!Printme1.com is a simple PDF printing service that we developed in December 2008 as easy way to print handbooks, manuals, and reports in a nice book like format. Here's how it got started.

We were looking around at at other printing sites and noticed that most of the big players were a bit of a hassle to use. Those big players all required their users to register, log-in, and then force them click through dozens of print options. These sites all use some kind of file conversion system that can take any file and turn it into a PDF.

To convert files into PDF's on any website, you need a great deal of computing power. Servers, software, and people to manage all of that. Those are big costs to recoup. And once you get to that point, it's easy to start adding in features that complicate the typical experience. But people who have PDF's don't need this feature and are paying for it anyway.

So the idea was to design a simple site targeted at people who have multi-page PDF files and want them printed like a book or manual. Avoid all of the hassle and costs of the big guys. And then pass the savings on to the users.

The Printme1.com format is standard for all orders: regular sized, high quality 20# white paper, printed in black & white, back-to back, and bound with a standard GBC comb with a clear front cover & sturdy black back cover. Simple!

We used Paypal because you already store your own payment & shipping info there, which lets you use our site without the need to remember another username & password combo. Again, simple!

So that's what we are trying to do here with Printme1.com. Please give us a try and let us know how we are doing sometime on our Facebook page.

Also, if you like our service, please do us a favor and tell your friends. The best advertising we use is from mentions in forums, blogs, and other social media. We really appreciate that!

Cheers,

MattMatthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02708947742819161108noreply@blogger.com0
